Three manuscript diaries, 53 black-and-white photographs, 2 dog tags, and 11 ephemera items regarding the Hamilton's experiences during WWII. Philip Hamilton wrote two of the diaries. In the first (1943), he recorded his day-to-day life while stationed in the Middle East. Topics include his friendships with other officers; work; ongoing correspondence with and affection for his wife, Ruby; a trip to Cairo, Egypt; and recreation, especially playing tennis and watching movies. Hamilton also commented on a severe typhus epidemic in his camp; he described how it led to the death of one of his friends. The second diary (1945) contains entries for eleven days he was on duty in Scotland. Ruby Hamilton wrote the third diary (1944-1945) from their home in England. Topics include her domestic work; preparations for Philip's visits on leave; and time spent with Philip at home. Ruby also noted V.E. Day and V.J. Day and expressed hope for Philip's final return. The majority of the photographs display images of Philip's air force friends, mostly in uniform, but there are also shots of his stations in the Middle East, as well as tourist spots in India and other countries. Some of the prints are labeled. The ephemera includes an application filled out by Philip for teacher training in Scotland; Philip's national service grade card (1940); and a small bound volume titled RELEASE AND RESETTLEMENT: AN EXPLANATION OF YOUR POSITION AND RIGHTS ([ca. 1945]). Acquired as part of the William B. Hamilton Collection of British Manuscripts.
